Jennifer's September 2008 Pick - SukiColor Pure Cream Stain for Lip/Cheek in Nectar ($41)

Despite working in the beauty industry, makeup has never been my forte. Most of the time, I limit myself to foolproof products like powder, lip gloss, and mascara. These days, however, I find myself experimenting with all sorts of new products thanks to Suki’s makeup line, SukiColor. Along with meeting Suki’s incredibly high standards for health and green-living, SukiColor products are easy to apply because they are neutral, light, and blendable.

My favorite product by far is the Pure Cream Stain for lips and cheeks. This hydrating, multitasking color creates a perfect pout and a sexy flush. Available in seven colors for a natural look on all skin tones, my absolute favorite is nectar--a juicy, sultry pink. Other favorites include dahlia, a rich, ultra-natural red with brown undertones (perfect for blue-eyed beauties), and sandstone, a baby pink with a bit of flirty appeal.

SukiColor products are made to enhance all shades of beauty.

Getting the Most Out of Your Products

It's no secret that organic skincare costs a bit more than its synthetic counterparts. But the investment is worth it. Natural products allow the skin to breathe. They encourage nature's process without making your skin dependent or maladjusted. Your skin thrives when infused with life. Natural ingredients work in harmony with your skin to enhance its natural healing and regenerative capabilities.

To truly get the most out of your organic investment, we've come up with a few tips and guidelines for your homecare routine. These tips are meant to educate you on the many ways your products can help you achieve a youthful, glowing complexion. For more information we invite you to stop by our store to speak with an esthetician.

Tips for Cleansers

Cleansing is one of the most important steps in achieving a clear, glowing complexion. At Pilar's we avoid cleansers that contain synthetic sulfates which can irritate and inflame the skin. We rely on natural ingredients to deeply cleanse and balance.

Finding the right cleanser for you is easy. In general, normal to oily skin needs a cleanser that foams like Naturopathica's Aloe Cleansing Gel ($28); while normal to dry skin benefits from a creamier texture like Naturopathica's Chamomile Cleansing Cream ($28). But, remember, rules are made to be broken! Choose a cleanser that leaves your skin feeling clean, but not stripped of essential moisture. For those in a hurry, Starflower's Lavender Cleansing Petalets ($17) make cleansing a breeze. These two-in-one cleansing and toning pads instantly remove makeup, leaving the skin soft and balanced.

Use a cleanser at least once a day to remove makeup, excess oils, and pollution. For most skin types, cleansing twice a day (morning and evening) is best. Cleansers with exfoliating beads (like our bestselling Suki Lemongrass Cleanser $31) should be used occasionally for a deeper cleanse. Massage (don't rub!) the beads across the skin to achieve a beautiful, balanced glow.

Tips for Toners

Toners have come a long way in recent years. Once considered an optional step, toners today are packed with active ingredients that treat the skin, helping to fight breakouts and reduce the signs of aging. Plus, a spritz of inexpensive toner after every cleanse allows you to use less of your more expensive moisturizers and serums.

It's best to apply toner to clean, slightly damp skin. Depending on the toner you choose, you can spritz it on or sweep a toner-saturated pad across the skin. Toner is also great throughout the day to refresh and hydrate and to set makeup.

Tips for Serums

Serums can be used by themselves or layered with a moisturizer depending on your skin's specific needs. For those of us used to creams, essential oils and serums can seem quite foreign. But rest assured, serums are one of the most effective and nourishing ways to deliver hydration and active ingredients to the skin.

Every skin type can incorporate a serum into their routine. Dry, mature skin, for instance, will benefit from serums with rose and geranium such as Naturopathica's Geranium Regenerating Serum ($40); while oily and combination skin can fight breakouts with serums that combat infected pores like Naturopathica's Neroli Toning Serum for Overactive Skin ($40.) Do you suffer from breakouts, flakiness, and occasional redness? Suki's Facial Moisture Serum with Blue Chamomile and Echinacea ($32) will help to bring skin back to balance.

The best way to apply serums varies according to your skin's current needs. You can apply serums alone, using it as your moisturizer. You can layer it underneath your cream or lotion. In some instances you can even mix a couple of drops with your favorite moisturizer to create the perfect level of hydration for your skin. Whatever way you choose, you'll get the best results by applying serum to skin that is slightly damp from your toner.

Tips for Moisturizers

Your moisturizer will most likely be your biggest investment, and with good reason--moisturizers are your best defense against fine lines, wrinkles, and, with some, skin conditions like rosacea and acne. Moisturizers sit on the skin all day and all night, delivering active ingredients to the deepest layers.

Most of us require different moisture levels throughout the year. A lightweight lotion might be perfect for the summer months but barely enough in the winter. At Pilar's we understand that finding the perfect moisturizer is a very personal thing. That's why we have tester stations for every moisturizer we carry. Don't be afraid to feel the texture and smell the fragrance of products before you buy.

Moisturizers should be applied to skin that is slightly damp from toning. Most people use too much. Protect your investment--a little bit goes a long way! Don't forget to moisturize your neck, decolletage, and the backs of hands where aging can really show.

Tips for Eyes

Hydration is the key to reducing fine lines and wrinkles. Plump, hydrated skin equals a smooth, youthful complexion.

Eye creams help diminish fine lines by adding just the right amount of moisture to this delicate area. The right eye cream will leave skin feeling smooth, soft, and prepped for makeup.

Certain eye creams, like Naturopathica's Vitamin K Eye Treatment ($72), address dark circles too. While not the end-all cure for bags (remember lifestyle and genetics play a role), you'll be surprised at how effective natural eye treatments can be.

Eye creams should be applied after toning. As with your moisturizer, remember to protect your investment--a little bit goes a long way!

Tips for Exfoliation

If there's one question our clients always ask us, its, "How do I get that glow?" Along with cleansing, moisturizing, and a generally healthy lifestyle, exfoliation is the final step to delivering that ever-so-coveted dewy glow. Regular, gentle exfoliation helps to fight the signs of aging, reduce acne and breakouts, even out tone, and improve texture. It even allows the skin to better accept hydration, using your moisturizer more efficiently.

An esthetician can help find the perfect type of exfoliation for you. She may choose a manual exfoliant like our bestselling Suki Lemongrass Cleanser ($31) to be used several times per week or a weekly treatment like Naturopathica's Pumpkin Enzyme Peel ($56.) There are several options, but all work to remove dead skin cells to reveal youthful, plump cells on the surface. Stop by our store to find out which exfoliant is right for you.

Whichever exfoliant you choose, don't overdo it. Use the product only as often as recommended by your esthetician. And, remember, exfoliation makes your skin more sensitive to the sun. Make all-natural mineral sunscreen your final step every day.

Sun Protection 101

The Sun gives us life...

And limited exposure to UV light is wholesome, enabling the body to synthesize vitamin D, which is essential for healthy bones. But at the same time it is a major contributor to free radical damage resulting in premature aging and disease. There are two types of sun protection: chemical sunscreens which absorb the sun's rays and physical sunscreens which create a physical barrier against sunrays.

Recently released scientific studies suggest a link between chemical sunscreens and hormonal disturbances in the body. The chemical compounds in sunscreens have been found to accumulate in body fats and in breast milk, and, by mimicking the effects of estrogen, can induce undesirable hormonal changes.

Chemical sunscreens can also irritate sensitive, rosacea, and acne skin types. Chemical sunscreens absorb the sun's light which turns into heat energy in your skin. This heat can often cause inflamation and breakouts.

Physical sunscreens, however, build a safe, physical protection layer on the skin and reflect the sunlight naturally. Here at Pilar's we only use 100% mineral sunscreens for skin protection. We offer safe alternatives with titanium dioxide and zinc oxide to protect from broad spectrum UV rays that burn and photo-age the skin.

Our bestselling minence mineral powders are makeup and sun protection in one. They are the healthiest way to protect your skin from harmful rays and the most beautiful way to give your skin a flawless finish. The powders even out imperfections and deliver a luminous glow. Plus, they are packed with vitamins and bioflavonoids (antioxidants) to fight the signs of aging.

For children and those with very sensitive skin, we love both Erbaviva's and Lavera's mineral sunscreens. Both products are safe for baby and great for Mommy too.

Understanding Ultraviolet (UV) Rays and Sun Protection Factor (SPF)

UVA - Penetrates the skin deeper than UVB causing wrinkles and skin aging. UVA may directly cause skin cancers including melanomas.

UVB - Burns skin in less time than UVA. Causes basal and squamous cell carcinoma skin cancers.

SPF - Refers to a product's ability to slow down the rate at which your skin will burn. The higher the SPF, the more protection your skin has from burning. For example, if it normally takes 10 minutes of sun exposure for your skin to burn, an SPF of 15 would ideally provide 150 minutes of protection. In actual use protection is less because the sunscreen gets diluted by sweat and moisture. An SPF of 15 blocks more than 92% of the UVB rays.

Natural Fragrance FAQ's

In May we added all-natural perfumes to our retail line-up. Truly pure fragrances support our boutique’s commitment to luxury beauty products that support health and total wellness. Our handpicked selections of natural perfumes contain no synthetics and are exquisitely crafted. Like fine art they are inspired, complex, and diverse. And, most importantly, they will never compromise your health.

How do I choose the perfect scent for me?
Each natural fragrance reacts uniquely to the wearer’s body chemistry and subtly fades into the skin over time. We invite you to visit our boutique to try our perfumes firsthand. We will apply fragrances to your skin (usually the fingertips) so that you can experience the complexity and depth of natural perfume as it reacts uniquely to you.

Why do natural perfumes cost more?
Rare and beautiful natural ingredients are very pricey. According to Mandy Aftel, the most money spent by commercial perfume houses is about $110 per kilo for the ingredients. Many of Aftel’s key, natural ingredients are over $10,000 per kilo each. After World War II perfume manufacturers began using primarily synthetic ingredients in their mixtures. While synthetics are cheaper, they lack the depth and complexity of natural essences. Plus, research suggests that some of those synthetics may actually be a health risk. The investment for pure, natural ingredients is worth it.

Why are the bottles small?
Unlike synthetic perfume that lingers on for hours and hours (sometimes to other’s chagrin), natural perfume subtly fades into the skin after a couple of hours. Smaller bottles fit easily into your bag for quick reapplication. When you buy a trio of Aftelier Perfumes, we include a beautiful zipper pouch to keep your investment safe and secure.

Are synthetic perfumes unhealthy?
Most perfumes are made of synthetic chemicals, not flowers.

Once distilled from natural (usually botanical) essences, perfumes today are synthetic mixtures that trick the brain into thinking that it is smelling something pleasant and natural. However nothing could be further from the truth.

Many chemicals used in popular perfumes may be potential health hazards. Some studies suggest that the chemicals can act as hormone disrupters, carcinogens, and neurotoxins. And, as we continue to expose ourselves to more and more synthetic fragrances (there are reportedly over 5,000 mixtures used not only in perfumes, but in beauty, cleaning, and household products as well), the number of reported allergic reactions are on the rise. According to some doctors, our immune systems are being overloaded.

Many of us have experienced a “perfume headache” or the annoying, lingering smell of a stranger’s overpowering cologne. All-natural and pure fragrances, like Aftelier Perfumes, are a healthier, more subtle, and absolutely luxurious option.
